In October 2021, there will be the launch of the MIB ESG Index, the first blue-chip index for Italy dedicated to ESG best practices
Euronext, 13 Lug 2021 - 12:10
Borsa Italiana, part of the Euronext Group, will launch the first blue-chip index for Italy dedicated to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) best practices in October 2021.
The MIB ESG Index will be powered by Vigeo Eiris (V.E), part of Moody’s ESG Solutions. V.E will provide the ESG assessment for the eligible companies, and will engage with them in order to benchmark their ESG performance. The index will include major listed Italian issuers that demonstrate ESG best practices.
The MIB ESG Index will respond to a growing demand for sustainable investment tools from investors and from the market. This launch is an important step in accelerating the transition to a sustainable economy and will allow investors to finance high-impact projects and companies in Italy and in Europe.
The MIB ESG will be a key component of a broader suite of ESG indices covering all Euronext geographies. Euronext has a leading position in the European ESG index market and a long track record of ESG indices. Euronext currently manages more than 40 ESG indices, starting with the launch of its first index related to ESG, the Low Carbon 100 Europe ®, in 2008. This year, Euronext went a step further by introducing the CAC 40 ESG ®, a sustainability-oriented version of the French national benchmark index, CAC 40 ® and the ESG WORLD 75 Index chosen by the German Government, to its broad index family.
The methodology of the index will be designed in collaboration with the financial community, public authorities, and regulators. The main goal is to facilitate the adoption of mainstream ESG investment approaches, such as the United Nations Global Compact principles, by institutional and private investors and to gain market consensus for sustainable and responsible investment.
Stéphane Boujnah, CEO and Chairman of the Managing Board of Euronext gave an interview to the Italian media outlet Il Sole 24 Ore, highlighting the launch of the MIB ESG index as one of the main milestone projects within the ongoing work on the integration of Borsa Italiana within Euronext.
