Sustainable Finance Series

Conversation with:
Ernesto Ciorra, Chief Innovability Officer del Gruppo Enel

The speech of Ernesto Ciorra, Chief Innovability Officer at Enel Group, provides an opportunity to reflect on the strategic importance of sustainability in the competitive positioning of our companies. Indeed, the approach to sustainability should not be driven by compliance or reporting needs, but rather by a continuous search for growth opportunities that could lead to a sustainable business development. The Interviews of the Sustainable Finance Series are part of the broader Sustainable Finance Partnership program launched by Borsa Italiana with the aim of stimulating and supporting the development of sustainable capital markets.

With its market capitalization of over 80 billion euros, Enel is the largest listed company on Borsa Italiana. In the last 10 years we have seen a real transformation of its business model. It has made the energy transition one of the most important drivers of innovation and sustainable growth, thanks to a long-term strategy in which an essential attention to the sustainability of competitive positioning has merged with an extraordinary innovative vision, reaching interesting leadership positions also in new markets.

The transformation that Enel was able to implement has aligned the objectives of all internal and external stakeholders, has dragged an entire supply chain and a whole system of interconnected knowledge and innovations, necessary to the rapid fulfilment of the entire program.

The speech will close with a message addressed to the small caps, starting with companies listed on the Euronext STAR Milan segment, whose twentieth anniversary will be celebrated this year. An invitation to focus on few important priorities from which to derive growth opportunities and avoid that the attention to sustainability becomes exclusively a compliance burden.
