UK shares end lower amid rising geopolitical concerns
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Milano, 20 gen - Shares in London closed lower as new threats from US president Donald Trump's new threats weighed on sentiment.
Trump's proposal of a 200% tariff on French wine and champagne, aimed at pressuring president Emmanuel Macron, has heightened fears of a broader trade war.
Trump is expected to meet European leaders on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Switzerland to discuss the impasse ahead of a speech scheduled for tomorrow at Davos.
Markets also assessed data showing that in the three months from September to November, the UK unemployment rate for people aged 16 years and over was estimated at 5.1%.
According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the employment rate was estimated at 75.1% and the economic inactivity rate was estimated at 20.8%.
Among individual stocks, shares of fintech group Wise surged 16.01% to 967.50 pence after reporting strong activity growth in the third quarter of fiscal 2026 and raising its profit guidance.
The London FTSE 100 closed down 0.67% at 10,126.78 points.
