Shanghai shares close lower amid tariff uncertainty
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Milano, 13 ott - Chinese share prices closed lower amid renewed uncertainty over US-China trade policy after president Donald Trump threatened to impose an additional 100% tariff on Chinese goods in response to Beijing's new export restrictions on rare earth minerals.
China vowed to retaliate if the tariffs are implemented, though Trump later indicated a possible reopening of dialogue ahead of a meeting with president Xi Jinping later this month.
On the data front, China's trade surplus narrowed to 90.45 billion dollars in September from 102.3 billion in August, according to the General Administration of Customs. Exports rose 8.3% year on year, while imports climbed 7.4%.
Losses were led by technology and new energy stocks.
The Shanghai Composite fell 0.19% to close at 3,889.50.
