Fincantieri shares gain on US shipbuilding partnership
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Milano, 7 apr - Shares of the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri were sharply higher in Milan trade, lifted by the news of a partnership in the US between the group's Finacantieri Marine Group subsidiary and the shipbuilders Fraser Shipyards and Donjon Marine.
At 0915 GMT, Fincantieri shares were up 4.00% to 14.04 euros, while the FTSE MIB benchmark was 1.10% higher at 46,126.87 points.
After the close of the market last Thursday, the three companies announced a collaborative framework "to bring new shipbuilding programs and technology to the 'Fourth Coast' in keeping with President Trump's and his administration's efforts to rapidly increase domestic shipbuilding," according to a statement announcing the deal.
The Milan stock exchange was closed for the Easter holiday last Friday and yesterday.
'Our initial goal is to provide the Coast Guard with a ready-to-build solution for its seven new light icebreakers, and we welcome others to join us on this and other potential projects as we collectively bring significant work to the Fourth Coast," commented George Moutafis, the CEO of Fincantieri. "The alliance of these accomplished shipbuilders remains open to other Great Lakes companies, especially those with maritime technology and manufacturing expertise.' Analysts at the Italian broker Intermonte noted that the icebreaker segment represents a high value-added niche, which had already been identified as a growth area for Fincantieri. Overall, Intermonet sees the partnership as "incrementally positive" as it broadens Fincantieri's perimeter of.
opportunities in the US.
