Apple pulls WhatsApp, Threads from China app store

Move made at Chinese request (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - New York, 19 Apr - Apple said it had pulled a series of messaging apps like Meta's WhatsApp and Threads from the App Store in China to comply with orders from Chinese authorities.

Removal of the apps came after Chinese officials cited unspecified national security concerns.

'We are obligated to follow the laws in the countries where we operate, even when we disagree,' Apple said in a statement. 'The Cyberspace Administration of China ordered the removal of these apps from the China storefront based on their national security concerns.' The move comes amid elevated tensions between the US and China over trade, technology and national security.
