US reportedly plans new pharmaceutical tariffs of up to 100%
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Milano, 2 apr - The administration of US president Donald Trump is preparing to impose imports tariffs of up to 100% on some medicines as it pushes drug companies to boost manufacturing in the US, the Financial Times reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
According to the FT, the tariffs are set to be announced as soon as today and would be applied to companies that have not reached deals with the White House.
Pfizer, AstraZeneca and Novo Nordisk are among companies that have reached deals with the White House to boost US investments and lower drug prices in exchange for a reprieve on tariffs, the newspaper noted.
Tariffs on imports from countries that have struck trade deals with the White House would also be capped according to the terms of the deal, the people familiar with the matter told the FT.
Last year, the US agreed to cap tariffs on drugs from the European Union at 15% as part of a deal struck with the bloc, the FT noted.
The FT reported that the new pharmaceutical tariffs are the result of a national security investigation under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, which was launched in April last year. Duties imposed under those investigations were not affected by the Supreme Court ruling in February.
rejecting tariffs Trump had imposed using emergency powers.
