Italy resident population steady at 58.943 mln
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Milano, 31 mar - Italy's resident population was broadly steady in 2025, falling by just 636 to reach 59.943 million as of January 1, 2026, data from statistics institute Istat showed.
The number of births in Italy continued to decline while the number of deaths were steady and net immigration contributed a positive 296,000 to the resident population.
A total of 355,000 births were registered in Italy in 2025, down by about 15,000, or 3.9% compared to the year earlier, while the number of deaths fell by 0.2% to 652,000. The natural balance, or the difference between births and deaths, was roughly a negative 296,000, worse than the negative balance of about 283,000 seen in 2024.
This was offset by the 296,000 increase in net immigration. A total of about 440,000 people immigrated to Italy in 2025, down by 2.6% compared to the year earlier. The emigration of Italians decreased more sharply, falling by 23.7% to 144,000.
As of January 1, 2026, Italy's foreign resident population amounted to 5.560 million, up by about 188,000 people, while the number of Italian citizens fell by 189,000 to 53.383.
