German May consumer confidence -24.2 vs -27.3 April - GfK
April revised up from -27.4 (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Berlin, 25 Apr - Germany's consumer climate is expected to come in at -24.2 points in April from a revised -27.3 points in March, according to a survey published jointly by GfK and the Nuremberg Institute for Market Decisions (NIM).
The preliminary reading for April was -27.4 points.
'The stronger increase in consumer sentiment compared to the previous two months is mainly due to the noticeable increase in income expectations,' explains Rolf Buerkl, consumer expert at NIM. 'Our analyses indicate that income expectations are primarily based on real income development.
And the signals here are definitely positive. Rising wages and salaries combined with a recent decline in the inflation rate form the foundation for increasing purchasing power among private households.' GfK added that "in times of multiple crises and a lack of confidence in future economic development, there is still a great deal of uncertainty among consumers, because they do not see a clear and comprehensible perspective for the country's future development. The current poor sentiment veils the facts. As a result, there is still no strong momentum for domestic demand.".
