France March retail rales up adj 0.5% vs Feb - Bank of France

Q1 retail sales up 0.2% vs down 0.6% in Q4 (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Paris, 22 Apr - In March, seasonally and working-day adjusted retail sales in France rose 0.5% compared with February when they increased 0.3%, according to data released by the Bank of France.

Sales of manufactured goods increased 1.0% after 0.6% the previous month, driven by sales of sports equipment, books, and footwear, while sales of furniture and new cars fell.

Food sales were stable after falling 0.2% in February.

In terms of distribution channels , hyper/supermarket sales were stable, those of small retailers increased 0.9% after 1.3% the earlier month, while those of department stores contracted 3.4% after rising 2.3%.

Comparing the first quarter with the previous quarter, turnover in retail trade as a whole edged up 0.2%, after falling 0.6% in the fourth quarter of 2023, with a 0.5% rise for manufactured goods after a 0.7% drop in the previous quarter and a 0.3% fall for food products after a 0.6% cotraction in the previous quarter.
